Fire-Opal, named after its colour, is a transparent opal and like other types of opal, it consists of silicic acid with relatively high water content. Its name is derived from the Roman word “opalus”, related to the Ops, the wife of Saturn, the goddess of fertility. The gemstone is a semi-precious stone with spherical layers that create three-dimensional gaps providing brilliance and intensity to the stone. It has an internal structure which causes it to diffract light and exhibit a range of colours. Fire-opal shows diverse colours depending on the conditions under which it is formed, ranging from yellow to orange or red, hence the term "fire-opal." The more intense its colour is, or the more 'fire' it displays, the more valuable a Fire-Opal. It is mostly found in Brazil, but can also be mined in Honduras or Guatemala, the United States, Canada, Australia, Ethiopia, and Turkey.
Historically, Fire-Opal is well-known, particularly in Mexico. The Mayas and Aztecs believed that a gem of such magnitude and vivacity could only have been formed in the rivers of paradise. That’s why they named it “quetzalitzlipyollitli” meaning the stone of the bird of paradise. The stone was used for ritualistic purposes and it is now considered Mexico's national jewel. According to legends, Cleopatra is said to have worn a set of fire opals to attract Mark Anthony, ruler of Rome. And Queen Victoria used opal jewellery as a protection against evil and enemies. As a plethora of colours and the symbol of heavenly beauty, fire-opal is the birthstone for October.
